Granny this is really funny I giggled.  How on earth were you able to keep this?  I asked him excitedly.

I know the importance of history even though I never sat under any great professor or learned scholar like you and your mates in our Android age replied my grandpa.  There is great wisdom and this feeling hidden in pages of written history that your smart phones can’t provide. Son never overlook things like this, facts from your fathers’ past.  Long for them; That’s one way to ensure you won’t repeat their mistakes, our mistakes actually, he concluded and we both laughed. Here I have in my hands a speech presented by Nigeria’s first Prime minister written by your own hands. Grandpa you sure don’t know how this makes me feel. I won’t forget today in a hurry! My friends will hear I said in excitement. You haven’t read that yet he said smiling as he always does. The details you will learn is more important than telling the friends you will come across.  You know what great teachers say about the difference between having a book on wisdom and being wise, he concluded.  Alright granny I will read it just now… So I read and now I want you to read with me friends, as my Grandpa’s grandchildren he never had because dad and mum had just me…

To my Son’s children

I write this speech as a note to remind them on how we were gladdened to have leaders of our Own skin color and a right to govern ourselves for the first time.  Even though I cannot certainly prove they will do better than our colonial masters, but I dream that they will become leaders of their own mind, ruling their minds with the right thoughts and giving no room for differences in language, culture or religion. But even if they do not become such until my grandchildren read this, I want my grandchildren to know on what mindset our time fought and won the battle for independence and love this our freedom till we defeat the expectations of the on looking whites. Grandchildren, hold this dear ‘Freedom starts in the mind’. Independence is the idea of only a Freeman.  If you cannot achieve personal freedom and independence in the mind, our country’s declaration today as an independent nation will never favor you, in this age or in the next, NEVER! You will only be a slave in a free land!!! Read Tafewa Balewa (a true patriot)’s speech presented today and never forget the price and cost of our independence.

The Speech Declaring Nigeria’s Independence by Nigeria’s First Prime Minister Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa – October 1, 1960
Today is Independence Day. The first of October 1960 is a date to which for two years, Nigeria has been eagerly looking forward. At last, our great day has arrived, and Nigeria is now indeed an independent Sovereign nation. Words cannot adequately express my joy and pride at being the Nigerian citizen privileged to accept from Her Royal Highness these Constitutional Instruments which are the symbols of Nigeria’s Independence. It is a unique privilege which I shall remember forever, and it gives me strength and courage as I dedicate my life to the service of our country. This is a wonderful day, and it is all the more wonderful because we have awaited it with increasing impatience, compelled to watch one country after another overtaking us on the road when we had so nearly reached our goal. But now, we have
acquired our rightful status, and I feel sure that history will show that the building of our nation proceeded at the wisest pace: it has been thorough, and Nigeria now stands well-built upon firm foundations…
… And finally, I must express our gratitude to Her Royal Highness, the Princess Alexandra for personally bringing to us these symbols of our freedom and especially for delivering the gracious message from Her Majesty, The Queen. And so, with the words ‘God Save Our Queen’, I open a new chapter in the history of Nigeria and of the Commonwealth,
and indeed, of the world.THIS IS THE GIFT….

I kept shaking my head,  I don’t know whether in affirmation or disapproval of what I read.  But one thing was sure I was compelled that ‘Nigeria’ as it is was a good idea worth dying for by our fathers.  We will only declare them fools by not living up to our Freedom, Our independence.  Long live you that’s if you are a Freeman,  long live us the freemen,  and long live our free land, Nigeria!!!
Happy independence once more from all of us at Mindhoarde…  a Nigeria of Independent men is the ideal Independent Nigeria.  We love you.
